The Salisbury Co-operative Credit Union Ltd.

The Salisbury Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. began in 1958. The idea was transferred to the public through Sunday classes conducted by Mr. James Royer and Mr. Cuthbert Sweeny in the old school building at the bay front. Like the Colihaut Co-operative Credit Union Ltd., the members started with only twenty-five cents but worked hard to garner achievement.

The efforts did pay off when it was registered as a credit union on April 24th, 1959. The first president was Mr. Norry Vidal who is now deceased and Mr. James Royer was the first treasurer. The membership increased to include the neighbouring villages of Coulibistrie and Morne Rachette. The society then served the communities of Salisbury, Coulibistrie, Morne Rachette and Mero.

The society’s office was located in a small wooden building rented from Mr. Elise Jno-Charles. It was then moved to another building opposite the playing field; but it was not until March of 1995 that the property on which the new office is located was purchased from Mrs. Mamah Anthony and renovated.
